Drake — “Hotline Bling” (2015)

Release Date July 31, 2015

Drake released his single “Hotline Bling” on July 31, 2015, on OVO Sound.

According to Genius, “Hotlinebling” is about Drake’s old love interest “Nebby” Zineb Samir, whom he dated in 2009 and references in “Look What You’ve Done.” —— “It’s like ’09 in your basement, and I’m in love with Nebby / And I still love her, but it fell through because I wasn’t ready.”

Drake has also acknowledged that his song “Best I Ever Had” is about Samir, so she has a storied history of showing up in his tracks. But, if you still need some convincing, here are some of the specific lines that could point to her.

Drake premiered “Hotline Bling” alongside “Charged Up,” “Right Hand,” on OVO Sound Radio Episode 2. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Drake’s then highest peaking single as a lead artist, only to be replaced by the Views single “One Dance,” which peaked at #1.

The song heavily samples the song “Why Can’t We Live Together” by Timmy Thomas.
